Germany's very first climate neutral popcorn
We are proud to have been a climate neutral company since November 2020. From raw material extraction to production in Berlin to the point of sale: the greenhouse gas emissions generated by Knalle are fully offset with recognized international climate protection projects. Our entire product range at all sales locations is climate-neutral.
Reduce, compensate, optimize: We always pay attention to climate-friendly action. We produce by hand and exclusively in our own Berlin manufactory. We ship our parcels climate-neutrally by post or bicycle courier in order to bridge the distances between our manufactory, the facilities for people with disabilities and our sales locations. In general, our distances are short as we are very well connected in Berlin. We use green electricity, avoid air travel and rely on rail travel.
Knalle is climate neutral - why that's important
Climate neutrality means that our actions at Knalle do not affect the climate. That is why the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere by our company must be reduced as much as possible and - ultimately and to some extent at present - offset. The climate crisis is one of the greatest challenges of our time. It is not just about protecting the environment, but also about securing a future worth living for generations to come.
Our aim is to minimize the impact of our activities on the climate and make a positive contribution to environmental protection. Every action counts. We encourage our customers and partners to join us on this important journey.
This is how we pack our popcorn
Our packaging credo is: as little as possible and only as much as necessary. Our popcorn bags are made of kraft paper and PE film to keep our popcorn crunchy for as long as possible. You can dispose of empty bags via the yellow garbage cans of "Grüner Punkt" and we are working on being able to use completely sustainable materials for our packaging in future: Bags made from corn, that would be a dream! At the moment, this material does not yet keep our popcorn fresh enough.
Climate neutrality is a principle that we always take into account in all our decisions. That's why we only use cardboard boxes that can be recycled for climate-neutral shipping. For extra protection of the bags, we only use wafer-thin tissue paper.
How and where do we compensate our emissions?
There is always room for improvement which is why we get support. Together with Fokus Zukunft, we have drawn up a greenhouse gas balance sheet for Knalle. We did this in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG), the internationally recognized standard for the accounting of greenhouse gas emissions by companies. The result of our carbon footprint has confirmed that we are already well positioned. Nevertheless, we will continuously strive to reduce and avoid emissions.
We offset the other emissions that we cannot currently avoid, such as those generated during the production of our ingredients, through climate protection projects, and we compensate for our unavoidable CO2 emissions through selected certified climate protection projects in collaboration with the sustainability consultancy Fokus Zukunft.
Energy-efficient cooking ovens in Nigeria
As Knalle is always fresh out of the oven, we found this project a perfect fit: FOKUS Zukunft coordinates the replacement of cooking stoves that are more efficient and use less wood for cooking and heating in the home than conventional stoves. The initiative also promotes knowledge among the population about improved kitchen and firewood management.
Forest conservation project in Peru
The Madre de Dios region is considered the Peruvian capital of biodiversity. As part of the Amazon rainforest, it is also a nature reserve that is home to numerous endangered animal and plant species, and our project enables small farmers to increase their income from a sustainable harvest of Brazil nuts and thus build up a secure source of income. This makes illegal deforestation of the rainforest unattractive.
